NOMS PTSA is excited to announce our partnership with PizzaHut in Prospect. Our Partnership cards will entitle the card holder to one free pizza a month for the next twelve months. The cards can be purchased for $10.00 with all proceeds staying with the PTSA to fund our programs and help fill the technology wish list at year end.

Legislative Message

Dear PTA leaders and parents,

Please contact your legislator via e-mail or phone requesting them to be opposed to HB 89 relating to school councils.

This bill calls for limiting the participation of parents serving on the school based councils by requiring at least one parent residing within the boundaries of the school district to serve on the council.

We feel this is an unfair disadvantage to parents whose children are lawfully enrolled in a school. Once a student is registered in a school then the parent/guardian should have all the rights as any other parent, including the parents right to run for school council.

Parents are one of the major stakeholders in our schools and we feel that this additional restriction would make it harder to get parent representation on the councils. It is often not easy to convince parents to run for school council and we do not want to place additional barriers on them.

Oldham County Dollars for Scholars

It's official! As of today, our scholarship application is online at
www.ocdfs.org. Please help us get the word out to potential applicants.
Can you please post something on your website, put in your newsletter,
post on your Facebook page, put on a bulletin board, etc. Any help in
getting the word out to potential applicants would be greatly
appreciated. You can "copy and paste" the information below or use the
flyer attached.

Additionally, please put Tuesday, May 22nd on your calendar for our
annual Awards Ceremony where we honor our recipients. It is much more
rewarding if you are there to personally award your scholarship to the
student.

We will be looking for volunteers to help review and score applications
in March. Additional information and dates will follow.

We would like to add a couple of new board members to our organization.

Attention High School students that are Oldham County residents!
Scholarship money is available thru Oldham County Dollars for Scholars.
OCDFS is a 7 year old non-profit organization and already has 56
sponsors who are offering 79 scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000
totaling $76,600. By submitting only one application, students can apply
for multiple scholarships.

Applications can be downloaded now from the organization’s website.
Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2010.

Reflection Award Celebration Scheduled

The 2011-2012 Reflections Celebration is Sunday, January 22, at 2:30 at the Oldham County Arts Center (see attached invitation). All Reflections school winnners will be recognized, district winners will be announced, and refreshments will be served.

Connect for Respect

Efforts to combat bullying in our schools and in cyberspace is receiving nationwide attention and PTA’s are taking a leadership role through the Connect for Respect initiative.

On the national level last month the Department of Education and many other federal agencies brought the education community together for an anti-bullying summit. The conference was an opportunity to share best practices and Connect for Respect was one of the initiatives shared with attendees. All this week CNN will run a series on bullying, details are at http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2011/bullying/.

One of the areas highlighted during the Department of Education conference was the lack of appropriate legislation to protect our children from bullying and this is why our advocacy efforts are so important. Yesterday Governor Jerry Brown signed a crucial bill to protect students in California from bullying and harassment. The California State PTA sponsored the bill and was instrumental in its passage. Congratulations to Carol Kocivar, State President, Paul Richman, State Executive and all our advocates in California for this significant achievement. The link to California’s press release is at

Poster Contest for Middle School Students

Baptist Hospital Northeast in LaGrange is sponsoring the Great American Smokeout (GSO) contest for elementary and middle schools. All you need to do to enter is a poster representing this years theme “The Me I Want 2B is Tobacco-Free!” I will be happy to come to your school and pick up all entries on Wed. November 2^nd and get them to our BHNE Representative in LaGrange….this would be a good activity to incorporate into RED RIBBON WEEK…..tell the students prior to Fall Break….they can get going on it….while on vacation?

Fall Fundraiser Success!

The Paragon fundraiser grossed $18,900. The PTSA will keep 40% of that, or $7,560. In addition, we received $750 in donations. The items will be sent home in early November. Thanks to everyone for their support of the PTSA.

Dear Prevention Partners & Parents of Youth Age 13-20 the link below is a survey that is being conducted on Underage Drinking by Seven Counties Regional Prevention Center (RPC). Seven Counties is a member of the Challengers coalition and provides funding support to us. Seven Counties is working to gather data on beliefs and practices of individuals in our community on underage drinking in order to obtain the HVE grant.

Please take 5 minutes (yes I took it) and that is all it takes to complete this short survey and represent Oldham County. You will have the option to be entered into a drawing for a $25 gift card at the end of the survey. YOUR OPINION MATTERS. Meeting called to order at 9:10 a.m.

President Report: Jenny Stegeman

Jenny welcomed everyone to her home and explained the agenda format change. She loves the use of email and make it your best friend. Note section on the agenda under old business. (See attachment)

September 22, 2012 parent forum on the new State Standards at NOHS at 7:00 p.m.

General Membership meeting will be held Sept. 28, 2011.

A Total of $3526.41 was gifted to the school at the end of the year and Rob Smith reported to Jennny that is was spent on technology.

VP Membership Report: Richelle McCoy

Reported that we currently have 906 members including 29 staff members. Patti Such won the $15 gift card to Wild Eggs. She sent in 106 memberships by Aug. 15 to try to win $. We were not the lucky ones. Betsy Lowe asked if she could issue a challenge to all middle schools to get 100% participation of the schools staff at the Comm. Council meeting. Richelle said “sure”.

Treasurers Report: Cheryl Cooper

] National and state dues went up this year and we will only be keeping $1.40 out of our $5.00 memberships. We will need to amend our by-laws to reflect any $ amount change to our membership dues.

Our balance as of July 1^st was $3000. Our current balance is $11,238.17.

We must use a tax-exempt number for purchases, we cannot reimburse tax.

There is a Cosco card in the works for NOMS.

Red Ribbon Challenge: Lana Rice and Leah Simpson-They are working with Challengers again this year. They have sponsors for the all school tee shirts. They applied for a grant that hopefully will be approved for even more dollars. Some of the activities will include free seating day, music playing during lunch, assembly explaining Choices tee shirts. A tee shirt design contest will also be held. Cash prizes will be handed out.

Reflections: Jane Luzzio-Theme is Diversity Means. Deadline Oct 15. There are a lot of changes this year that is making it difficult for the students to submit. There will also be no district ceremony.

Family Day is a national movement to inform parents that frequent family dinners together are an effective way to keep kids drug free. Dinners make a difference!
Did you know . . . 
Kids who have frequent family dinners are likelier to get better grades in school AND are likelier to say that they have an excellent relationship with their parents.

Kids who have frequent family dinners are less likely to smoke, drink or use other drugs AND are less likely to have friends that use illicit drugs or misuse prescription drugs.

Social Media or Social Madness?

Social Media can be a great way for tweens and teens to share ideas, communicate with friends, share pictures and videos and reach out to peers all over the world. It can also pose dangers to tweens and teens when not used appropriately. Online bullying can result in depression or suicide, child predators can lurk in chat rooms, waiting for the opportunity to MIRL (meet in real life) and information and pictures placed online can affect students’ future college and job applications. As parents, we would never send our kids out to drive without education, practice and oversight – we need to make sure we don’t send them online without those things, too.

Here are some tips for keeping tween and teens safe online . . .
Know where your child goes online, visit the sites they visit
Limit time online – make sure kids are spending at least one hour in physical activity
Keep computers in main areas, not in kids’ rooms
Make sure your kids know what information NOT to share with anyone online, and that all the information they do share cannot be removed
Encourage your kids to report cyberbullying, and not to participate in it! Don’t say anything online that you would not say in person
Educate yourself and your teen/tween – check out online resources for more tips on how to keep your kids safe online

I am happy to announce the National PTA is now accepting applications for the Grassroots Advocacy Training of Trainers Initiative! Selected participants will receive a trip to the National PTA headquarters to receive this great training in attempts to expand advocacy capacity at the state and local levels.

Advocacy has been the cornerstone of PTA since its founding. National PTA recognizes the importance of advocacy and the need to expand advocacy expertise throughout its large network of members. We seek to use the Grassroots Advocacy Training of Trainers as a tool to achieve this goal.

The purpose of the training of trainers (ToT) is to provide training tools for a cadre of PTA leaders and members in their states on how to execute effective grassroots advocacy campaigns that promote the National PTA federal public policy agenda.

The training and the materials attendees will receive were developed by NPTA in partnership with the Midwest Academy. Since its founding in 1973, the Midwest Academy has become one of the nation’s premier grassroots training organizations. Its clients include the National Education Association, the American Cancer Society, and the AARP.

The application deadline is Wednesday, October 5, 2011, C.O.B. We encourage applicants to build their applications in a separate document and when they are ready to submit, to copy and paste their responses into the online application.

Desired Outcome

In contrast to a training, where the goal is for those who attend to develop certain skills, the goal of a ToT is to be able to train others. Attendees will come away from the ToT with a resource book designed to allow them to replicate the ToT in their states and local districts.

Criteria

State and local PTA members with introductory advocacy experience and who have an interest in expanding their advocacy network in their states and local districts are encouraged to apply (no nomination needed). National PTA will attempt to select applicants that represent a range of geographical locations; however, this is dependent on the amount of applications received.

Only PTA members from PTA units/congressesin good standing may apply. Applications must be submitted online and must follow all application requirements. Any application that does not fulfill all application requirements will not be considered. Complete application packets will include:

Completed cover sheet
A response for each of the application questions listed below (not to exceed 500 words each)
Supportive documentation: A draft plan of action (1000 words or less) of how the ToT initiative will be sustained in your PTA state/local unit or congress. This plan should include projected annual goals and numbers of how many new advocates will be trained.

While all PTA leaders are eligible to apply, special priority will be given to those advocates that have been previously unable to attend advocacy trainings held in conjunction with the annual PTA Legislative Conference.

Selection Process and Logistics

The final selection of the 10 state or local leaders that will attend the NPTA 2011 ToT will be made by the NPTA Legislation Committee, in conjunction with, NPTA Public Policy staff. NPTA will cover the travel, room, and board* for each applicant selected.

Each application will be scored utilizing a scoring rubric totaling 100 points. Questions and the points associated are outlined below.

The 2011 Training of Trainers session will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2011 and the morning of Sunday, December 11, 2011 at the National PTA Headquarters in Alexandria, VA. The session will meet from 8:00 a.m. until approximately 5:00 p.m. Participants travelling to the session from out of town will need to arrive on Friday, December 9, 2011 with a departure from Reagan National no earlier than 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 11th.

* Includes and are limited to round-trip airfare, hotel accommodations, ground transportation, and per-diem food expenses for meals that are not provided by NPTA.

The Silent Epidemic - Wake up and Smell the Coffee invite

Teen suicide is now being called “The Silent Epidemic”. When asked “Have you made a plan to commit suicide in the past 12 months?” a staggering 10.9% of our youth answer “yes”. Parents, we can’t afford to assume our kids would never consider taking their own life.

STUDENTS AT NORTH MIDDLE:

We are looking for a unique design with the theme of "Good Choices" that mustangs would wear with pride. There are several rules that you need to follow:

1. The design will be on the FRONT only.

2. The design must communicate a positive message that encourages healthy choices. The design can incorporate words or pictures or a combination of words and pictures.

3. The shirt will be BLACK. You are to choose up to 3 additional colors for the design. The design must fit on the 8.5 x 11 paper provided by your Mustang 11 teacher. You must complete the entry form on the reverse side for your entry to be considered by the judges.

4. The designs are due by September 26. There will be time to work of the design during Mustang 11   September 20, 21, 22. If you do not complete your design during Mustang 11, you may take home your design to complete the design over the weekend and turn it into your Mustang 11 teacher on September 26.

5. Only individual designs will be accepted and must be your original work. You may not work on the design with a partner nor in a group. You must not use any materials, characters, pictures, slogans, icons or symbols that are protected by copyrights and/or trademarks.

6. The committee will choose the top 5 designs, and the students will vote during Mustang 11 on their favorite design.

7. The top three votes will receive:

     1st place = $100

      2nd place = $50

      3rd place = $25

8. The first place design will be used as the artwork for the front of the t-shirts that will be given out during Red Ribbon Week and worn for events throughout the school year. The winning design will be announced during an assembly during Red Ribbon Week.

A lot is happening on Capitol Hill – not only is Congress working to fix No Child Left Behind, but it is also prioritizing programs and initiatives via the federal appropriations process.

After the U.S. Department of Education utilized executive discretion to defund the only federal program dedicated to engaging families in the education of their children,

(Patti and Gay, you guys may be doing this already!) Jennie Walz also found out at her SEPTA meeting today that Anita Davis will be the one giving the general overview at the North Campus.

The dates for the Oldham County Schools PARENT FORUMS to discuss the new educational changes in Kentucky with Senate Bill 1 are below.

These forums will cover the impact and implications that every parent needs to know regarding the new English/Language Arts and Math curriculum standards and the state assessment system.

These forums will be held throughout the county on the following locations and dates:

· South Oldham Campus, Arts Center, Monday, September 19th from 6:00-7:00 pm;

· Buckner Campus, OCHS, Tuesday, September 20th from 6:00-7:00 pm;

And

· North Oldham Campus, North Oldham Auditorium, Goshen, Anita Davis will give the general overview.

Thursday, September 22nd from 6:00-7:00 pm.

Dance the Night Away

The dance was a huge success.

Thank you to the 28 PTSA dance volunteers. The dance went off perfectly. The kids had a great time. There were no bullying incidents. All hallways and exits were covered. Below is the information about the three candidates running for the Parent Representative position on NOMS SBDM Council.

My name is Jennifer Finnigan. My husband and I moved to Oldham County from Texas 2 years ago. We have 3 children, 1 who will be attending North Oldham Middle School next year, and 2 that will be attending Goshen elementary next year. I have my Bachelor’s in Kinesiology and my Masters in Health Promotion. Prior to starting a family, I worked in the AT&T Corporate health Center at the AT&T World Headquarters in Bloomfield, NJ, and then worked for a prominentDallas surgeon. Both experiences fueled my love for wellness, and a healthy lifestyle which I continue to teach my family. Currently, as a stay at home mom, I have been very active in Goshen elementary, as room mother, volunteering in other ways for our teachers, helping with the book fair annually, and regularly working in the library. I feel it is my duty and responsibility as a stay at home mother to be as involved in my children’s education, and help support the school in any way possible.

I would like to serve on the SBDM council because I believe it’s important to stay involved in our children’s educational experience. I believe that by serving on this council, I can help maintain the high integrity and standards of excellence that North Oldham Middle School enjoys. My background in wellness, consistent voluntary commitment to Goshen Elementary, ability to resolve issues, and my love for children and education will allow me to help serve this committee very well. I enjoy working in a team environment, and working together to reach a common goal. I believe the school experience should be fun, motivating, fair, challenging at all levels, and most importantly…should happen in an environment where everyone is treated as equals and respected. Background

Senate Bill 1 mandated that new standards be developed for all subject areas. According to SB1, the new standards were to be "higher, fewer and research-based". In the fall of 2010, KY adopted the common core standards for Math and English Language Arts developed by a national group (Council of Chief State School Officers). As part of the state's work with the new standards, regional content meetings were arranged to provided information and guidance to districts. OCS has representatives from across the district attending these sessions to gather information and resources necessary to the implementation of the new standards. Concurrently, the district formed a curriculum advisory team to study curriculum design and develop new frameworks for ELA and Math. (Those serving on the state content teams also sit on the curriculum advisory team so that all work meshes.) The curriculum advisory team is working under the guidance of Dr. Grant Wiggins and his associates, national experts on curriculum design.

Goals

Develop an aligned K-12 curriculum that promotes student understanding and engagement

Honor the district vision and mission in the development of the curriculum

Utilize best practice in curriculum design to inform the work

Coordinate curriculum development with existing district work, i.e. Thinking Strategies

Build capacity of staff in curriculum design as well as knowledge of the new curriculum documents

KY Proposed increase of PTSA dues

I do not know if I sent you all the attached notice on the proposed increase in Kentucky PTA dues. Special note to Treasury and Membership that we need to stay on top of this as we wil need to change our Registration membership forms.

Our District President, Pam Renner is currently checking with the Kentucky PTA a request about when the dues increase would take affect. The concern is if the increase is immediate that the local unit PTAs would not have time to amend their bylaws (if needed to increase their membership dues) before our Membership Drives in August. The Kentucky PTA is currently checking on this question. She will keep us posted.

Spring Letter from the PTSA President

Good Morning Ladies,

First, I hope you all had a great Mother’s Day! I also hope you had a great week with all the Derby festivities! What a wild few weeks we have had. The school days are flying by fast and furious, and we have the final push of PTSA sponsored activities yet to complete!

I cannot tell you how much I thank you all for all of your hard work this year. This year we have had a great deal of creative talent step to the plate to offer support to NOMS. Your hours of dedication are truly appreciated! Thank you, thank you!!

We have been praying for our own NOMS VOLUNTEER of the YEAR, Lana Rice, who recently/unexpectedly underwent surgery for a Thyroid Cancer 2 weeks ago. She appreciates all the cards, kind words and prayers for her and her family as she continues to gain strength and concentrate on her health. Please keep those cards and prayers going!

I apologize to each of you if you feel like I have not been in contact via e-mail updates, as I too have been a bit over extended lately! Please take a look at the listing below of the “end of the year” information at a glance I complied. I hope it helps all of you as I have tried to list all the dates I have ~as I know all of our calendars are filling up with end of the year activities~ .

We will still have our regularly scheduled meeting this week, May 11, 2011 in NOMS Media center.

We will also need an extra additional PTSA meeting date: Tuesday May 31, 2011. This change is needed so that we can complete of several important agenda items. We will be holding a General PTSA Meeting the first 15 minutes of this May 31^st meeting to vote for our next years slate, and proposed budget. We will then move right into our final board meeting which will include any last minute wrap ups for the year. We will have slate completed, fundraiser planning form completed, budget for next year discussion, and all board members will be asked to turn in an information sheet that will explain the job they held this year and all its particulars. This information is very important for next year’s PTSA Board. Please e-mail me or our PTSA Treasurer Cheryl Cooper with any budget concerns or questions, as well as ideas for next years budget. Also, e-mail any new fundraiser ideas as we need to research and turn a final list of ideas to the OC Board of all potential fundraiser we will be holding next year. We will then adjourn for this year and meet for a celebration luncheon !! Luncheon location TBD.

· Wednesday, June 1st 8^th grade DANCE - Wed. - 7-9:30 PM in the NOMS gym. Attire is dressy-ties, dress pants, dresses with straps or sleeves, dress shoes. Only NOMS 8th graders will be admitted. Admission is free. The dance ends at 9:30 PM. Students must be picked up at that time.

· Thursday, June 2nd - Promotion/Recognition. North Oldham High School Gym 9:30 - 11:30 AM .We will honor the 8th grade students with a special recognition ceremony. Many parents and guests are expected to attend. No parking is available in the high school student lots. Shuttle transportation will be provided beginning at 8:45 a.m. from Transfiguration of Our Lord Catholic Church 1620 Hwy 1793-just up the road from NOMS. You will enter at the high school gym entrance to the right of the Auditorium. Please be seated in the NOHS gym by 9:15 am. This is an Early Release Day so students will be dismissed after lunch at 1:30.

· June 2, Early Release Day, Last Day for Students students will be dismissed after lunch at 1:30.

Mr. Smith congratulated Lana rice for being the volunteer of the year for NOMS. Open discussion about his ideas for a new grading process. He would like to know what the definition os success is in today’s world and he has concerns for pushing students to be an A, B, or C. He has a lot of emotional feedback on the issue and will continue to further gathering information on how to implement it. More discussion will be given at the May meeting.

Safeguard PIRC Funding!

On February 19, 2011, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a Continuing Resolution (CR), to take effect March 4, 2011 and fund government operations through the end of the fiscal year. The CR includes not only unprecedented cuts to education funding – a more than $10 billion overall decrease – but also the proposed elimination of PIRCs, the ONLY federal funding stream dedicated to engaging parents and families in the education of their children.

There is at least one PIRC in every state and territory. This proposed program elimination affects all PTAs and all parents. Without inclusion of PIRC funding in the FY2011 CR, the sole funding stream for family engagement would disappear, halting all PIRC program operations. We must tell Congress that continued program funding is not a luxury, but a necessity: when parents are engaged in education, our nation’s students reap the benefits.

De-funding of PIRCs negatively impacts PTAs, schools and parents.

Why PIRCs matter:

They provide schools and districts with tools to effectively partner with parents.
They empower parents to advocate for their children and school reform.
They provide training and professional development on effective family engagement to districts and school staff.
They collaborate with state PTAs to engage all public school parents in their children's education.
They train family engagement coordinators in schools.
They convene parent leadership academies to equip parents with skills needed to help their children to succeed.

Annually, PIRCs served more than 16.4 million parents by connecting them to their schools to improve the education of their children. Parents need PIRCs. You can help! Please urge the White House, both of your Senators, and your Representative to include PIRC funding in the FY2011 Continuing Resolution.

Anti-bullying bill approved by House committee

School bullies in Kentucky could soon have a new list of reasons why they should leave their fellow students alone.

House Bill 370, sponsored by Rep. Mary Lou Marzian, D-Louisville, would specifically protect school children from being bullied based on their race, national origin, religion or other personal characteristics. Gay and lesbian students would also be better protected under the bill, supporters say.

The bill passed the House Education Committee this afternoon and now goes to the full House for a vote.

Proponents of HB 370 say the measure will strengthen the state’s current anti-bullying law, which requires schools to have policies in place to deal with bullies, but does not list specifically protected characteristics.

“This gives folks in authority specific direction,” Marzian said.

Some lawmakers on the committee said it is up to school personnel to enforce statutes that protect students at their schools. Oldham County Assistant Superintendent Dan Orman said HB 370 would be “an exclamation point” for adults at a school who are charged with protecting students.

The National Center for Education Statistics reports that nearly one in three students between the ages of 12 and 18 reported being bullied at schools nationwide in 2007.

Senate signs off on Bible literacy bill

The Bible’s role as a work of literature and in shaping historical events should be a course option for high school students, the Senate said in a 34-1 vote today.

Senate Bill 56, sponsored by Sen. Joe Bowen, R-Owensboro, would direct the state Department of Education to develop a course curriculum around the Bible, which local school councils could then approve for teaching in their schools. The course could focus on the Old Testament, the New Testament, or a combination of the two.

“This bill ensures it will be about education, not indoctrination,” Bowen said. Under the bill, students could use any translation of the Bible they choose. The course, Bowen said, would be designed not to preach to students or win them over to a single interpretation, but to help them understand the Bible’s role in the arts and history.

The course, an elective option, would be classified under the social studies department. “The influence the Bible has had on our society and all of Western Civilization is not something we can evade,” Bowen said.

The legislation now moves to the House for its consideration

House approves raising dropout age to 18

Kentucky children would be required to attend school through age 18 instead of the current dropout age of 16 under a bill that cleared the House this afternoon.

House Bill 225, sponsored by Rep. Jeff Greer, D-Brandenburg, would increase the dropout age in two phases. The dropout age would be raised to 17 in July 2015 and to age 18 in July 2016. The bill also tightens the state’s alternative education programs and more firmly states the General Assembly’s intent relative to career and technical education.

“This measure will have an impact on our economy, on our society, but most importantly, for our children,” Greer told House members.

The legislation now moves to the Senate for its consideration.

Teacher evaluation bill clears House

The state House of Representatives hopes to make public school teacher evaluations more uniform and more effective under a bill that would create a single evaluation system by the 2013-2014 school year.

House Bill 120, sponsored by House Education Committee Chair Carl Rollins, D-Midway, would eliminate the current system, which is actually 174 separate evaluation systems in each of the state’s 174 school districts, Rollins said. Evaluation under HB 120 would be statewide, not district-wide, and would use several evaluation techniques—from peer and parent/student surveys to some measure of student progress—to evaluate a teacher’s performance instead of evaluation by principal or school committee observation alone.

“This evaluation system isn’t to be used punitively. It is to be used to make all of our teachers better,” Rollins said.

HB 120 passed the House by a vote of 92-2 and now goes to the Senate for consideration.

Bill to allow ads on school buses passes House

Commercial advertising would be allowed on the outside of school buses in Kentucky with local school board approval under a bill that cleared the House 61-35 today.

House Bill 67, sponsored by Rep. Terry Mills, D-Lebanon, would let school boards decide whether to allow the advertising, Mills said. Political or campaign ads and ads for alcohol or tobacco products would be prohibited.

Mills said HB 67 will help bring money to school districts in dire need of funding.

The legislation now moves to the Senate for its consideration.

Senate approves early graduation bill

High school students across the state would have a consistent program to graduate early and start college early under legislation approved by the Senate today.

Senate Bill 69, sponsored by Sen. Ken Winters, R-Murray, would require 18 credits in core academic areas for graduation under the program, including two college-level courses through the Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate programs.

“The basis of this bill is the effort to eliminate the ‘lost senior year’” in which students coast through the final year of school without being challenged, Winters said.

The legislation now moves to the House for its consideration

Senate OKs mandatory Pledge time in schools

Hours after the Senate Education Committee approved a plan to mandate time for the Pledge of Allegiance in all public schools, the full Senate did the same.

Senate Bill 15, sponsored by Sen. Vernie McGaha, R-Russell Springs, was passed as part of the Consent Orders with a single vote in opposition. While mandating all schools set aside time for the Pledge, individual students could refrain from participating.

The bill, known as the Kentucky School Patriot Act, now moves to the House for its consideration.

Snow Day Decisions

As the snow falls I become immediately concerned for the welfare of Oldham County school students. However, I take comfort in knowing that I have a great staff that work tirelessly to make the decision to close school with the best interest of our students in mind.

Predictions of snow make for restless nights for Margaret Johnson, Director of Transportation for the Oldham County Schools. She wakes up periodically throughout the night to check the weather forecasts and, if the weather starts turning toward a snow event, at 3:00 a.m. she calls Rick McHargue, Assistant Superintendent, and the members of her transportation staff. This group of seven people hit the roads to assess the driving conditions around the county. The team has divided the county into sections and each member drives a specific route, checking the roadways that are usually the most dangerous when snow covered.

At 5:00 a.m., the members of the group converge at the district’s transportation center to meet with Mr. McHargue to discuss the situation and share their impression of the road conditions. Ms./Mrs. Johnson also usually contacts the state and county highway departments to assess their progress in clearing the roads. After the group has reported in, it falls to Mr. McHargue to make the final decision whether we close schools, delay the opening, or open on schedule.

It seems that for most of the mornings when a snowstorm is happening or about to happen, a clear-cut answer is usually not that apparent. Mr. McHargue enjoys the mornings when the snow has already fallen and a clear-cut answer is apparent. However, the days that the storm is just beginning or is expected to begin are the toughest days. On those days Mr. McHargue must place some faith into weather forecasts that can predict large snow amounts that actually produce little, or predict a dusting and we receive multiple inches.

Nevertheless, our administrators try to make the decision with safety as the primary concern. Ms./Mrs. Johnson takes the decision to heart, as a former bus driver she knows that it would only take one bus accident that could have been avoided to point out that it’s better to err on the side of caution than to make a decision that would endanger a student. Her decision to cancel school inherently falls on one question: Would she feel safe driving in the current conditions?

Once the decision is made, Mr. McHargue places a call to me for confirmation. Then the notification process starts. Mr. McHargue contacts the local television and radio stations so the message will be on the newscasts by 5:30. The district web master is contacted so an announcement can be placed on the district web page. At 5:45, an automated telephone call is started on the telephone notification system to the households of the approximately 12,000 students and 1,800 employees of the school district. It usually takes about 45 to 55 minutes for the system to place the calls to every number.

Although the students may appreciate an unanticipated day off school, they will have to make up any missed days before the summer break can begin. While they may hate to give up a warm summer vacation day for a school make-up day, we feel it’s best to lose a day than to risk the loss of a student due to bad weather.

· Talent Show Auditions will be held on Feb. 8 and 9 from 3:30-6:00 in the chorus room, please. Sign ups in the front office. Rehearsal - Feb. 24th. Talent Show is on Friday, Feb. 25th in the North Campus Auditorium.

Dollars For Scholars

OCDFS Sponsors,

It's official! As of today, our scholarship application is online at

www.ocdfs.org. Please help us get the word out to potential applicants.

Can you please post something on your website, put in your newsletter,

post on your Facebook page, put on a bulletin board, etc. Any help in

getting the word out to potential applicants would be greatly

appreciated. You can "copy and paste" the information below or use the

flyer attached.

Additionally, please put Monday, May 16th on your calendar for our

annual Awards Ceremony where we honor our recipients. It is much more

rewarding if you are there to personally award your scholarship to the

student.

We will be looking for volunteers to help review and score applications

in March. Additional information and dates will follow.

We would like to add a couple of new board members to our organization.

REFLECTIONS PROGRAM: Our very own Jane Luzzio will kick the program off and will be announcing Reflections Winners and presenting them with checks.

High Achiever Party Approaches

Dear Friends and Family members of NOMS,

If you are new to NOMS you are in for a treat - really. For those that are familiar with High Achievers - our first one this year is just around the corner.

One of my favorite programs sponsored by the NOMS PTSA is the High Achiever Celebrations! High Achiever celebrations are held at the end of each grading period for those that scored A's or A's and B's on their report card and didn't receive any Disciplinaries during the term.

On Friday, December 3 - NOMS PTSA will be hosting the 6th, 7th and 8th grade High Achiever celebrations in the NOMS cafeteria. The schedule is as follows:

6th grade: 1:30

7th grade: 2:00

8th grade: 2:30

If you are able to volunteer for this joyous occasion please contact Richelle McCoy (see PTSA Board). If you are unable to volunteer but would like to donate a carton of soda (cans please), please drop them off at the NOMS front office labeled HA.

Thank you so much for all that you do as parents to help your children understand the importance of good grades and good behavior! It really shows!

Developing Healthy Self-Esteem

Do not compare yourself to others - Everyone is different and unique. There is no other person exactly like you.
Don't put yourself down - You will become what you say and think you are.
Admit mistakes - Refuse to keep beating yourself up over them. You are your own worst critic. Don't keep tearing yourself down.
Be kind - To you and to other people.
Think positive - Don't dwell on others' negative comments.
Be involved - Hang out with people who are positive, who like being with you and enjoy life.
Learn to laugh - Even at yourself - experience the humor in life.
Encourage, accept and respect - Help others accept themselves.
Be positive - How long can you go without saying something negative?
Guard media - Messages in what you hear, watch and read should encourage and build you up.
