Safety and Security Protocal at NOHS that relates to NOMS

Dear PTSA members, parents, and friends,

I know the threat at the high school has been of great concern to many (if not all) parents at NOMS. Many of you have called with your concerns. On Monday, NOHS distributed a copy of their New Safety and Security Protocol. I have attached a copy of the file for those of you that did not see it in printed in the Courier Journal on Wednesday, 9/30/09. You will see the protocol in full. The protocol was sent home to every NOHS family.

I think you will feel much better about the safety of your middle school student after reading the new protocol. Essential there is NO interaction between high school students and middle schools students at any time (there never has been, but this new protocol implements severe consequences if any high school student is even remotely close to the choir or band rooms. For some clarification...the high school students take band and chorus from 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. - that is their only time in the band/chorus area of the building. After 9:30 high school students do not have access to that part of the building. Middle school students do not enter that part of the building until after 10:10. There is NO overlap. The hallways are routinely monitored and teachers are in hallways during change of classes. Protocol listed below:

"OFF LIMITS AREAS
* New gym lobby is off limits at all times with the exception of band and choir students walking to and from class
* New bathrooms by the new gym and band and choir room are only to be used by band and choir students during 1st period

Another high school protocol is that all inside school doors are locked throughout the school day. At no time can someone get into a room without someone from the inside opening it for them. Now students must also sign in and out of classroom and are required to have a hall pass with them if for any reason they need to be in the hallway during class time.

HALL PASSES
* It is the student’s responsibility to sign out with teacher permission with a hall pass if you need to leave class for any reason. Students in the hall without a hall pass will be given a detention or a more severe consequence on the discipline ladder depending on the number of infractions a student has.
* Use the bathroom that is closest to your classroom location.

I hope you find this helpful.

Sincerely,Betsy Lowe
